The hotel in Qingdao is a grand old place on the seafront, well maintained and modernised without losing anything of its early 20th century charm. The room has a balcony facing the sea and is equipped with a telescope for eyeing up the talent on the beach. Or maybe you're supposed to look at the ships passing by, or the pagoda on the hill opposite. Not sure.
The hotel owners apparently did an attic conversion recently as they have what they call a "garret bar". The information booklet says it's open round the clock so at 11 pm we went for a bite to eat and a drink. My fish came with exactly nine chips, so I asked for another nine. Before we'd finished eating, the waitress asked would we like to have the bill as they were closing at 12. What about the "round-the-clock service"? It seems once around the clock is what they meant -- from 12 noon to 12 midnight -- not twice.
