A detail I forgot to mention about our stay in Xi'an:
The hotel directory includes massage service, available 24-hours a day. We called one evening around 11 and were told that at that time only "special" service was available. When we asked the obvious question, we got the obvious -- and candid -- answer. I imagine this is not the official policy of the hotel but rather a little business on the side run by the night staff. By chance we had noticed that the hotel next door had a health & fitness centre so we enquired there and found a much more wholesome approach to massage therapy.
We went next door and ended up getting a mixed Chinese-Japanese-Thai massage. I'm not sure which part was which, but it started with some gentle rubbing with oil; next came the vigorous back work with the fingers; then he tried to pull my fingers off one by one, followed by my arms and legs; and finally he walked barefoot up my back from backside to neck and down again.
The whole thing lasted 80 minutes and cost around 40 euros. No special services were offered or requested.
