... but man, it pours!
After almost two weeks in China I finally saw rain yesterday. And boy, did the skies make up for it! Thunderbolts and lightning -- very, very frightening! Well, not really frightening, but impressive. So impressive that our flight to Kunming was delayed by over two hours because of the dangerous weather conditions.
So, goodbye hot and steamy Shanghai, hello cool and temperate Kunming! I actually wore long trousers, shoes and socks last night -- should have worn a jacket too. They call this"the City of Eternal Spring" due to its year-round mild climate. Temperatures vary by only about 10 degrees from January to August.
As an introduction to the cultural diversity of Yunnan province, we went to see a show called "Dynamic Yunnan". It's a presentation in song and dance of some of the traditions of the ethnic groups in the province, with a focus on the different drums they use for religious and social events. One of the most impressive pieces was the rain dance.
It seems to work.
