I started learning Chinese a few months ago with the modest objective of being able to say the basics in politeness: hello, thank you, "do you speak English?" and so on. My focus is on listening and repeating, but I've learnt a little pinyin and even to recognise and write a few Chinese characters. Thankfully most signs in shops and in the metro are written in both Chinese and English (or at least in Chinese characters and pinyin).
One situation that I didn't foresee occurred this evening at dinner. I asked the waitress the way to the toilets and she indicated the door. On the other side of the door there were two more doors, one for ladies, the other for gents. But which was which?
男 or 女 -- which would you choose?
